Call and Live Campaign against human trafficking kicks off in Washington, D.C.

IDB, Ricky Martin Foundation also announce campaign expansion in Latin America

Ricky Martin, IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno and Ayuda Executive Director Mauricio Vivero joined forces today to launch Call and Live in Washington DC, a campaign that promotes a free confidential hotline (1-888 NO-TRATA) to prevent human trafficking
from Latin America and provide protection services to Latino victims. Other partners of the initiative include the DC Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs, Telemundo, Univisión, Washington Hispanic and Radio Viva 900.

According to the U.S. State Department, 20,000 individuals are trafficked into the United States every year and the D.C. area is one of the top ten locations where this occurs.

“There is a critical need to educate the Latino immigrant community about the dangers of human trafficking. Ayuda is pleased to partner with the IDB and the Ricky Martin Foundation in this campaign to reach Spanish-speaking victims directly and connect them to Ayuda’s legal and social services. Together, we will fight the crime of human trafficking and help victims build safe, new lives in America”, mentioned Mauricio Vivero, whose organization has served the Latino community in the D.C. area for the last 35 years.

Call and Live DC is modeled after the successful social marketing campaigns in Latin America and the Caribbean. Ricky Martin is featured as spokesperson in all of the public service announcements and other outreach materials.

“Call and Live is an unprecedented effort in our fight against human trafficking. We have received more than 55,000 phone calls through the national hotlines, fostered 60 police investigations and saved at least a dozen victims. These concrete results, which span
across five countries in Latin America, have lead us to launch today a campaign in the D.C. region to prevent this horrendous crime in the Latino community”, said Ricky Martin, whose foundation advocates for children’s rights from its Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico headquarters.

The IDB is launching this initiative as part of the IDB-DC Solidarity Program, its local corporate responsibility initiative for over a decade. This year the Bank, the Ricky Martin Foundation and the Central American Office of the International Organization for
Migration (IOM) will also expand the campaign to five more countries in Latin America.

“In the area of human trafficking, we are committed to supporting governments across the region with their prevention, protection and persecution efforts. Today I am pleased to announce not only this launch in Washington, D.C., but also the expansion of Call and Live to other countries. In the next few months, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Paraguay will join this Pan-American effort, making our determination to fight against human trafficking even stronger,” pointed out IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno.

BID, Fundación Ricky Martin anuncian también expansión de la campaña en América Latina

Ricky Martin, el Presidente del BID Luis Alberto Moreno y el Director Ejecutivo de Ayuda Mauricio Vivero aunaron hoy esfuerzos para lanzar Llama y Vive en la ciudad de Washington D.C., una campaña que promueve una línea telefónica de asistencia gratuita (1-888-NO-TRATA) para prevenir la trata de personas desde América Latina y ofrecer servicios de protección a víctimas de este crimen. Otros socios de la iniciativa son la Oficina del Alcalde de Asuntos Latinos, Telemundo, Univisión, Washington Hispanic y Radio Viva 900.

Según el Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos, 20.000 personas son víctimas de trata internacional en Estados Unidos y el área metropolitana del Distrito de Columbia se encuentra entre las diez ciudades con mayor prevalencia de casos.

“Existe una necesidad crítica de educar a la comunidad de inmigrantes latinoamericanos sobre los peligros de la trata de personas. Ayuda se complace de esta asociación con el BID y la Fundación Ricky Martin para llegar directamente a las víctimas de habla hispana
y conectarlas a nuestros servicios legales y sociales a través de esta campaña. Juntos lucharemos contra el crimen de la trata de personas y ayudaremos a las víctimas a construir vidas nuevas y seguras en Estados Unidos”, declaró Mauricio Vivero, cuya organización ha servido a la comunidad latinoamericana del área metropolitana de Washington D.C. durante los últimos 35 años.

Llama y Vive DC sigue el modelo de una exitosa campaña de márketing social realizada en América Latina y el Caribe. Ricky Martin aparece como portavoz en todos los mensajes públicos de televisión y en otros materiales de divulgación.

“Llama y Vive representa un esfuerzo sin precedentes en nuestra lucha contra la trata de personas. Hemos recibido más de 55.000 llamadas telefónicas a través de las líneas de asistencia nacionales, activado 60 investigaciones policiales y rescatado a un mínimo de doce víctimas. Estos resultados específicos, obtenidos en cinco países de América Latina, nos han llevado a lanzar hoy una campaña en el Distrito de Columbia para prevenir este terrible crimen dentro de la comunidad latina”, aseguró Ricky Martin, cuya fundación defiendelos derechos de los niños desde sus oficinas en Washington, D.C. y Puerto Rico.

El BID lanza esta campaña como parte del Programa Solidaridad BID-DC, su iniciativa de responsabilidad corporativa local desde hace más de una década. Este año, el Banco, la Fundación Ricky Martin y la Oficina Centroamericana de la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (IOM por sus siglas en inglés) ampliarán la campaña a cinco países adicionales de América Latina.

“En el campo de la trata de personas, estamos comprometidos a apoyar a los gobiernos de la región en sus esfuerzos de prevención, protección y fiscalización. Hoy tengo el placer de anunciar que el Banco no sólo lanzará esta iniciativa en Washington, D.C., sino que además expandirá Llama y Vive a otros países. En los próximos meses, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panamá y Paraguay se sumarán a este esfuerzo panamericano, reforzando todavía más nuestra determinación de luchar contra la trata de personas,” señaló el Presidente del BID Luis Alberto Moreno.
